Abstract

Seneca’s tragedy has recently been revisited by critics and is being re-interpreted from different perspectives. Deeper understanding of stoic self-concept has led to studies focused on common features of character self-fashioning in his prose and in tragedies, which advanced into re-examination of the relationship between his tragedy and prose. The dissertation analyzes Medea in line with recent review on Seneca and aims to thoroughly discuss implication of the tragedy by especially observing self-consciousness and self-fashioning of the hero. First, by comparing with Euripides’ Medea, the dissertation will illustrate Seneca’s Medea as being more self-conscious compared to characters in past Greek literature. Seneca’s Medea looks at oneself more objectively compared to Euripides’ Medea and builds its character through speech mechanism such as self-communication. Even the killing of her children, known as the climax of the tragic plot, is an expression of extreme self-assertion. Self-fashioning process of the hero, however, is not just the self-fashioning of tragic characters. Medea’s self-formation rather reflects stoic ‘meditatio’ conducted to become stoic sapiens from stoic proficiens. This argument is first confirmed through meta-theatricality of the tragedy. Meta-theatricality is prominent in the tragedy, where mythical Medea or Medeas in past literatures are set as idealistic model and the hero attempts to present oneself for self-formation. This characteristic of Medea, however, reminds of the self-fashioning process of stoic proficiens aiming to become stoic sapiens. The argument that stoic proficiens is reflected in Medea is reinforced with consideration of reception/response of audience. This is because, as Rabinowitz pointed out, the audience will read ‘meditatio’ of stoic proficiens in Medea’s self-formation process when the work is appreciated by detaching from characters as ‘authorial audience’ instead of relating to character as ‘narrative audience’. In addition, with the understanding of Medea as reflection of a stoic character, this dissertation deals with how to interpret the paradoxical evil result of killing her children, a rather non-stoic temper, even though Medea goes through a self-formation process of stoic ‘meditatio’. Regarding this, the possibility of Seneca critically verifying her philosophy, especially stoic meditatio through her tragedy, will be studied and limitation of such argument will be addressed.
