초록

This study examines the origins and development of clay toys produced in the village of Filimonovo in Tula Oblast, Russia as well as their technical and thematic features to shed light on the culture of Russian peasants. The old Russian clay toys, which existed in close connection with the folk beliefs of the East Slavic people, were popularized as playthings in the 14th and 15th centuries. By this time, the majority of Filimonovo's inhabitants had turned to pottery making as a profession, with artisans developing their own styles of toys. By the end of the 18th century, Filimonovo toys enjoyed huge popularity across the country, and the village was established as a center of clay craft. The characteristics of Filimonovo toys are revealed in their colors, shapes, and themes, which are recognized as a cultural heritage that reflects the lives and spirits of the Slavic people. Also, the style of the toys is being introduced to the world by fashion designers who find their artistic motifs in the Slavic tradition. Thus, it is necessary to recognize Filimonovo toys not only as a traditional craft but also as a part of the fabric of Russian modernity.
