Abstract
This study presents a Yangmingist perspective on achieving the key goals of the 2022 Revised Elementary Moral Education Curriculum—namely, learner autonomy and moral practice. In moral education, fostering learners’ voluntary and active participation and resolving the gap between moral cognition and moral action remain central and enduring tasks. The 2022 revision, based on Bruner’s theory of narrative thinking, aims to connect knowledge and understanding with actual moral practice in students’ daily lives. However, it still begins from intellectual understanding and does not sufficiently incorporate reflection from Eastern philosophy. The revised curriculum aligns with Zhu Xi’s view that the accumulation of perceptual knowledge (見聞知gyeonmunji) can transform into moral knowledge (德性知deoksungji), however, this perspective can be supplemented and deepened through a Yangmingist viewpoint. Yangmingism holds that the fundamental driving force of moral practice lies not in the accumulation or construction of knowledge, but in the realization of virtuous innate knowing (德性良知deoksung yangji). Wang Yangming regarded this study of cultivating innate knowing (致良知chiyangji) as an essential form of learning that applies universally—from sages to ordinary people and even to children. The theory of chiyangji can be reinterpreted as the cultivation of moral sensitivity, providing significant implications for developing learners’ autonomy and achieving moral practice. Accordingly, this paper newly proposes educational directions for the 3rd–4th grade moral curriculum from a Yangmingist perspective. It reconstructs the key ideas, content structures, and achievement standards related to the values of honesty and sincerity in the “relationship with self” domain. The proposed contents—such as making one’s conscience the subject of judgment and action, asking and solving moral questions independently, and experiencing moral self-satisfaction—can greatly contribute to enhancing learner autonomy and promoting genuine moral practice.
