Abstract

This paper studied cooperative identity from the viewpoint of member, objective, and method. This paper tried to seek a cooperative identity from the historical facts, the ICA Statement on the Cooperative Identity, cooperative laws, research, and cooperative definitions.The study redefines cooperative identity from three scopes as follows:a.Cooperative identity in terms of member: The members of cooperatives are the comparatively weak, forming solidarity for greater strength.b.Cooperative identity in terms of objective: Cooperatives have the objective of pursuing not only economic goals but also social and cultural goals.c.Cooperative identity in terms of method: Cooperatives run their business through cooperation, and the members are the users of the business and the owners of the cooperatives.Putting these together, a cooperative is an organization that members, who are comparatively weak, and also the user and owner of the cooperative, run the business through cooperation for not only economic goals but also social and cultural goals.
