Abstract
This presentation explores the academic potential of "Ancient Studies" (Godaehak) through the lens of classical Korean poetry (gojeon siga), aiming to reconfigure the interpretive horizon of East Asian humanities. Ancient Studies seeks to comprehensively examine the fundamental structures of ancient life—thought, language, ethics, emotion, and memory—making it a fertile ground for interdisciplinary inquiry across literature, philosophy, history, linguistics, religion, and the arts. Among these sources, classical poetry emerges as a central text that encapsulates the ontological consciousness, worldview, communal ethics, and emotional structures of early societies. This study highlights classical poetry not merely as a literary artifact but as a medium for emotional memorialization, ethical verbalization, and affective ontology. Works such as Gongmudohaga, Gasiri, Cheongsan Byeolgok, and Hwangjoga exemplify how collective identity and social memory were cultivated through repetition, rhythm, symbolism, and ritual. Far beyond the expression of personal sentiments, these poems served as cultural mechanisms for internalizing moral norms and sustaining communal cohesion. Through these functions, classical poetry becomes a key epistemic tool for Ancient Studies, bridging ancient consciousness with contemporary interpretation. Moreover, the subjectivity portrayed in classical poetry challenges the modern notion of an autonomous rational self, instead proposing a "relational self" that is ethically responsive to nature, others, and the community. This mode of thinking resonates with contemporary critical theories such as ecophilosophy, feminism, and postcolonialism. Thus, classical poetry provides not only the methodological foundation for Ancient Studies in East Asia but also offers an alternative model to Western humanism by emphasizing intersubjective ethics, emotional harmony, and ontological acceptance. By integrating emotion, ethics, and existence into a unified form of thought, classical poetry revitalizes Ancient Studies as a relevant framework for addressing the crises and transformations of modern humanities. This study ultimately proposes a renewed value for Ancient Studies by showing how classical poetry functions as both a textual archive and an ontological practice of thinking and remembering.
