오늘의 고전시가 연구는 문학적 담론 가치 내지 소통력의 약화라는 상황에 직면해 있다. 이러한 상황에서 학문적 진지함과 엄밀성을 포기하지 않되 이 시대의 독자와 교양인들에게 좀더 가까이 다가갈 수 있는 논점의 창출 내지 확대가 요구된다. 고전시가에 관한 주제사적 탐구는 그런 점에서 매우 유력하고도 생산적인 의의를 지닐 수 있다. 주제사적 탐구란, 문학 작품에 출현하는 주제적 단위(thematic unit) 내지 모티프에 관한 연구를 가리킨다. 시에 관한 주제사적 탐구는 서사문학 연구에서와 같은 형식적, 구조적 분석보다 시적 이미지, 상징, 모티프 등의 반복, 변주, 확장, 전이 등에 관한 폭넓은 성찰 속에서 개별 작품/작가의 이해를 심화하는 데에 좀더 중요한 의의가 있을 것이다. 한정된 작품 위주의 미시적 접근에 빠지기 쉬운 시 연구에 거시적 성찰과 해석의 시야를 제공하는 데에 그 공헌이 기대된다. 고전문학과 현대문학 사이의 斷層 의식을 넘어서 시대적 흐름 속에 놓인 시들 사이에서 모티프의 반복, 변이, 전개 등을 탐구하는 연구, 한국문학 외의 개별문학이나 문화권 단위의 비교 대상까지를 포괄하여 시적 모티프를 논하는 연구, 서로 다른 시가 장르 혹은 산문 서사문학까지를 포함한 범위에서 모티프의 전이, 확산, 변화를 해명하는 연구 등의 ‘관심과 시야의 확장’은 문학적 담론의 소통과 울림을 확대하는 데 상당한 가능성을 열어 줄 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The conflict between quality of literary discourse and communication capability between writer and reader is the most serious problem, which study of Korean classical poetry is faced with. Nowadays, the former is in inverse proportion to the other. Thus, scholars are asked to find out new methodology of the study on Korean classical poetry, with which they will become closer to their readers in general without losing academic seriousness and accuracy. In this regard, thematic approach toward Korean classical poetry might be a convincing and productive methodology. Thematic approach means study on thematic units or motives appeared in literary works. Thematic approach will deepen our understanding of literary works or writers through broad investigation on repetition, variation, expansion, or transfer of poetic images, symbols, or motives rather than investigation of forms and structures of the works in epic study. As thematic approach provides a macroscopic view in understanding and interpretation of the study of Korean classical poetry, in which scholars easily fall into the snare of microscopic view, it will greatly contribute to the study of Koran classical poetry. Broadening of our interest and outlook up to the following studies will open the way to increase communication capability and expend resonance in literary discourse: study on repetition, variation, expansion, or transfer between the poetry in the flux of time, which bridging the crevice between classical and contemporary literature; comparative study of poetic motives between different literary traditions; study on repetition, variation, expansion, or transfer among different literary genres.
