Abstract
This paper aims to explain Evagrius’ view of pathos and apatheia, in relation to Plato’s theory of tripartite soul, the Stoic theory of emotion and the views of the Early Church Fathers. Analyzing and examining related literature, we will get the following conclusion. First, according to Evagrius’ Origenian creation theory, the only creature of the first creation was non-material noes. But due to negligence or carelessness, noes have fallen from the unity and loving communion with God. In His benevolence towards fallen noes God created the material world, while each nous got its own soul and body according to its merit. According to Evagrius, pathos starts from sense-perception, which presumes the body. Therefore, if we want to arrive at perfect apatheia, we must be free from the body and its desires that tie and restrict us. Evagrius thinks that the material world will disappear at the Final Redemption and that our nous will regain its natural condition(i.e. prayer and contemplation of God), freed from the body and bodily passions. Second, although Evagrius borrowed terms of the Stoic theory of the soul, he re-interpretated their meaning with relation to Plato’s tripartite soul and Early Church Fathers’ understanding of pathos. According to Evagrius, for example, praktike aims to achieve apatheia, eliminating pathos and purifying the appetite part of the soul, meanwhile physike(the first stage of gnostike) purifies the spirited part and theologia(the second stage of gnostike) the rational part. Moreover, like Philo of Alexandria and Origen, Evagrius presents metriopatheia as a priliminary curriculum preparing for apatheia which is subdivided into imperfect and perfect one. Evagrius contends that perfect apatheia can only be achieved for a moment during the undisturbed prayer in this embodied life. Nevertheless, apatheia will be perfect and forever at the Final Redemption. Third, logismos is like Seneca’s primus motus or Philo’s propatheia, in that it is not passion itself but a preliminary prelude of passion. Nontheless, contrary to Seneca who considers primus motus as a merely involuntary reaction, Evagrius thinks that logismos includes cognitive as well as affective aspects and that sometimes the logismoi attract the pathe and sometimes the pathe the logismoi. Forth, Evagrius maintains that perfect apatheia and the undisturbed prayer are not the final goals of the monastic life. The final goal of human life is love, the offspring of apatheia. According to Evagrius, only through apatheia we can learn to love the way God intended. In short, love is not a passion but the product of apatheia. Therefore, passionlessness which does not give birth to love is not true apatheia. In Evagrius’ view, the practical life should flower not into selfish satisfaction but into love of neighbour and charity.
