Abstract
In order to examine the origin of Evagrius' apatheia, it is necessary to look at the concept of passion in Aristotle and the Stoics. For Aristotle, passions are closely related to and influenced by the body. Fundamentally, passions are related to the irrational part and are evaluated by the mean, which is the principle of virtue of character. Aristotle defines passions from a physiological and philosophical perspective, and the two are correlated. He says that passion arises through sense perception and phantasia. First of all, if the primary emotion that arises through sensory perception can be called a simple emotion, then the secondary emotion that arises through Phantasia can be called a complex emotion. What Aristotle calls simple emotions are similar to the primary emotions or first motion that Seneca later called. The Stoic concept of passion is similar to Aristotle’s concept of the complex emotions. Stoics say that passions are wrong judgments or opinions. However, they differ in that Aristotle makes a clear distinction between phantasia and opinion, and includes opinion as a function of reason. Stoicism appears to have excessively expanded the scope of passion to the realm of thought. Just as the Stoics called passions ‘wrong judgments or opinions,’ Evagrius also called them ‘evil thoughts.’ So, Evagrius says that if you completely rid oneself of evil thoughts and reach a state of apatheia, you can regain the health of the soul and proceed to to ‘true knowledge.’
