Abstract

This paper constructs an industry-region panel dataset from the South Korean restaurant sector to examine the relationship between franchise expansion and regional labor productivity. Quantile regression analyses by levels of commercial development and initial productivity show that increases in the franchise ratio lead to productivity growth but the marginal effect is diminishing. Furthermore, the productivity-enhancing impact of franchise entry is substantially stronger in underdeveloped commercial districts than in more developed districts.
