초록
This study aims to examine the syntax and semantics of the ‘-e cwta’ construction. Based on the syntactic characteristics of the ‘-e cwta’ construction, the ‘-e cwta’ construction can be divided into auxiliary verb constructions and serial verb constructions. The possibility of changing the connective ending and the insertion of adverbs can be the critical criteria in distinguishing the two types of the ‘-e cwta’ constructions. The ‘-e cwta’ auxiliary verb construction cannot replace the connective ending with ‘-ese’ nor can it insert adverbs, while the ‘-e cwta’ serial verb construction can replace the connective ending with ‘-ese’ and can also insert adverbs. Additionally, because the ‘-e cwta’ construction typically includes the ‘ekey’ (to) adverbial, it is usually considered an auxiliary verb construction that influences the argument structure of the main verb. However, when ‘cwuta’ indicates the movement of the object, it is difficult to classify it as an auxiliary verb construction. This paper argues that the ‘-e cwta’ auxiliary verb construction expresses the meaning of ‘benefaction’, while the ‘-e cwta’ serial verb construction emphasizes the meaning of ‘the movement of the object.’ As for syntactic structure, the ‘-e cwta’ auxiliary verb construction takes a clause complement, formed by the main verb becomes the argument of the auxiliary verb, while the ‘-e cwta’ serial verb construction takes a single verb phrase which includes the preceding verb and following verb. The ‘-e cwta’ adverbial argument participates in the syntactic structure as an argument of the verb ‘cwuta’ (to give). The realization of adverbials such as ‘ul wihay’ (for) or ‘ekey’ (to) depends on the semantic features and argument structure of the main verb. This syntactic structure is reflected in the lexical-semantic structure of the ‘-e cwta’ construction based on the Generative Lexicon Theory. The lexical-semantic structure of the ‘-e cwta’ auxiliary verb construction is an event function that takes the event expressed by the main verb as an argument, and it includes the telic role of ‘benefaction.’ The lexical-semantic structure of the ‘-e cwta’ serial verb construction consists of the event of the preceding verb and the event of the following verb ‘cwuta’ (to give), with the the following verb ‘cwuta’ (to give) headed. In the qualia structure, the meaning of the preceding verb is presented as the agentive role, and the meaning of the following verb ‘cwuta’ (to give) is presented as the formal role, which is related to the realized syntactic structure. The argument structure takes the argument structure of the following verb ‘cwuta’ (to give).
