Abstract
This paper analyses Sandra Steingraber’s Having Faith: An Ecologist's Journey to Motherhood by mobilizing two key words: motherhood and care. Traditional discourses surrounding motherhood and care have constantly played crucial role in defining femininity as confined within the private arena. Especially discourses on women’s bodily experience such as pregnancy, delivery, and nurturing have been maintaining and perpetuating the asymmetrical power relations between man and woman, reason and emotion, and civilization and nature. This paper argues that Steingraber radically departs from these traditional discourses; instead, she re-interprets motherhood as the fundamental experience of the other, and care as the universal experience of the human beings’ inter-dependency. In doing so, Steingraber opens up a possibility for a new thinking by deconstructing the dichotomy of (individual) body and nature.
