이 글은 여성 주인공의 경계를 넘나든 삶을 그린 조선 후기 영웅소설 <홍계월전>을 “가족각본”이라는 개념을 통해 독해한다. 가족각본은 젠더에 따라 상이한 역할을 기대 받고 그것을 수행하는 고정적인 인식을 지칭하는 것으로 오늘날까지 한국 사회에서 정상가족 신화를 지탱하고 있다. 가족 내에서 상이한 역할들을 넘나들면서 홍계월이 경험하는 질곡을 통해 일상 속에서 비가시화되기 쉬운 가족각본의 실체가 드러난다는 점에서, <홍계월전>은 “각본 없는 가족”에 대한 모색이 필요한 오늘날에도 시사하는 바가 크다. <홍계월전>의 가족각본을 분석하는 작업은 기존의 젠더 중심 관점에서 이탈한 것이 아니라 그것을 보다 예각화한 접근이다. 이를 위해 2장에서는 가족의 탄생을 중심으로 <홍계월전>의 가족서사를 살펴보았다. 이 작품에서는 원 가족, 입양 가족, 혼인으로 인한 가족이라는 총 3번의 “가족의 탄생”이 이루어진다. 각 경우에 따라 관련 인물들의 다양한 인식과 목적이 교차하고 있음을 확인하였다. 다음으로 3장에서는 홍계월에게 어떤 가족각본이 주어졌는지를 검토하였다. 홍계월은 견고한 가족각본의 경계를 오가면서 균열을 만들어내고 때로는 가족각본이 지닌 모순을 노출시켰다. 물론 그의 행적이 온전히 저항적인 것은 아니며 가족각본에 불만을 품으면서도 억지로나마 그것을 이행하려는 모습도 보였다. 하지만 그로 인해 가족각본의 실체를 감지할 수 있었다는 점에서 홍계월의 삶에 의미를 부여할 수 있다. 가정으로 복귀할 수밖에 없는 여성영웅들의 결말에 아쉬움을 느낄 수 있지만 조선 후기에 대중적인 인기를 구가한 여성영웅들의 삶을 통해 오늘날까지 견고하게 영향력을 발휘하고 있는 가족각본을 이해할 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 이 글에서는 <홍계월전>에 한정하여 논의를 전개하였으나 추후 여성영웅소설군의 가족각본에 대한 확장적인 논의도 가능할 것이다.
Abstract
This article reads “hong-kye-wŏl-chŏn”, a hero novel in the late Joseon Dynasty that depicts a female protagonist's life crossing the boundaries, through the concept of “family script”. Family script refers to a fixed perception of being expected to play different roles depending on gender and performing them, and it supports the myth of a normal family in Korean society to this day. In that the reality of family script, which is prone to visualization in everyday life, is revealed through the song experienced by Hong Kyewŏl while crossing different roles in the family, “hong-kye-wŏl-chŏn” has great implications even today when it is necessary to seek “a family without a script”. The work of analyzing the family script of “hong-kye-wŏl-chŏn” is not a departure from the existing gender-centered perspective, but a more acute approach to it. To this end, Chapter 2 examines the family history of “hong-kye-wŏl-chŏn”, focusing on the birth of a family. In this work, a total of three “births of a family” are made: the original family, the adopted family, and the family due to marriage. In each case, it was confirmed that the various perceptions and purposes of the people involved were intersecting. Next, in Chapter 3, it was reviewed which family script was given to Hong Kyewŏl. Hong Kyewŏl created cracks as he crossed the boundaries of a solid family script, and sometimes exposed the contradictions of the family script. Of course, her actions were not completely resistant, and she was dissatisfied with the family script, but she was forced to do so. As a result, it is possible to give meaning to Hong Kyewŏl's life in that it was possible to detect the reality of the family script. Although you may feel sorry for the ending of female heroins who had no choice but to return to the home, it is meaningful in that you can understand the family script, which is firmly influential to this day through the lives of female heroes who gained popularity in the late Joseon Dynasty. In this article, discussions were limited to “hong-kye-wŏl-chŏn”, but an expansive discussion on the family script of the female hero novels will be possible in the future.
