평양 산정현 교회의 찬송 ‘내 주는 강한성이요’에 대한 소고

한국교회의 발전사에서 빠질 수 없이 등장하는 것은 순교의 씨앗이다. 수많은 순교자들 중에서도 평양 산정현 교회의 주기철 목사, 김철훈 목사는 유래를 찾아 볼 수 없는 순교의 모델들이었다. 현재 북한에는 산정현 교회가 없고 그 자리에는 저항과 반동의 정신을 ‘뿌리채뽑는다’는 의미로 교회 터를 뒤집어 엎고, 인공호수를 만들어 놓았다. 그러나 하나님 이외에는 어떠한 것도 찬양치 않는다는 순교자들의 영성은 지금까지 이어져 와서 오늘날 한국교회는 세계에서 경이적으로 평가할만한 성장을 이루어왔다. 이에 마르틴 루터가 작곡한 ‘내 주는 강한 성이요’ 찬송으로 위기 때마다 힘을 얻고 동력이 되어 일제와 싸워 이기고 공산주의와 싸워 승리할 수 있었다. 또한 영성을 고양시키고 발현시키는 역할을 가지고 왔다. 한국교회의 영성과 찬송에 있어서는 평양 산정현 교회를 빼놓고는 이야기가 되지 않는다. 평양 산정현 교회는 신사참배에 맞서서 순교로 신앙을 이어 갔기 때문에 그 의미는 크다고 할 수 있다. 산정현 교회는 한국교회의 양심이었고 증인이었다. 백절불굴의 투쟁정신과 강한 저항 정신은 오직 예수를 따라 죽는 것이 참 사는 것이며 하나님 이외 다른 신을 섬기면 안된다는 강한 영성을 내포하고 있다. 특히 ‘내 주는 강한성이요’는 이러한 정신과 운동과 더불어 한국 교회사에 길이 남을 것이다. 앞으로 한국교회에 어떠한 고난이 닥치더라도 순교와 저항은 계속 될 것이기 때문에 한국교회의 미래는 밝다고 할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 ‘내 주는 강한성이요’가 가지는 투쟁과 저항 정신이 오롯이 살아 남아서 오직 하나님만 찬양하는 한국교회가 계속 부흥과 발전이 있다고 믿기 때문이다.
Abstract
One issue that cannot be overlooked in the advancement of the Korean Church is that of martyrs and martyrdom. Of all the Christian martyrs, it is difficult to find such models of martyrdom as can be found in the stories of Pastor Kim Chulhoon and Pastor Ju Kichul of Pyeongyang Sanjeonghyun Church. In North Korea, Pyeongyang Sanjeong Church is no longer standing and in the oppositionist reactionary spirit to remove any remnant or roots of this church, an manmade lake has been put in its place. However, the LORD our GOD has not forsaken the everlasting spirits of these and other martyrs of the Korean Church and today, the surprising growth of the Korean Church can be highly evaluated. It was through praising the LORD with the hymn by Martin Luther, "A Mightly Fortress is our GOD"that offered strength in times of trouble during the successful struggles against the Imperialist Japanese and the Communist. Also, through this praise, the spirituality of the Korean Church was able to grow and strengthen. In contemplations of the spirituality and praises of the Korean Church, Pyeongyang Sanjeonghyun Church cannot be overlooked. The Pyeongyang Sanjeonghyun Church refused to bow down to Japanese Shrine worship and this refusal had powerful meaning. The actions of Pyeongyang Sanjeonghyun Church showed the clear Christian conscience and was a testament of the Korean Church. With a strong and determined resistance spirit and the mindset of following only Jesus even unto death could the Korean Church lead a life of truth and oppose Japanese Shrine worship. It was with this kind of spirit and social movement embodied in the hymn "A Mighty Fortress is our LORD" that will forever remain in the history of the Korean Church. In the times to come, in whatever struggle may be faced, continued martyrdom and resistance will lead to a bright future for the Korean Church. The spirit of struggle and resistance to strife embodied in "A Mightly Fortress is our GOD" is the only way to survive through praising the LORD for the continued revival and advancement of the Korean Church.
