Abstract
The Ein feste burg ist unser Gott is the most well-known hymn by Martin Luther (1483-1546), who founded a church based on reformed theology, crying out for a ‘church worthy of a church.’ Even though the hymn had been a cornerstone for congregational hymn singing since the Reformation, it has historically been misused and abused as a kind of battle song. This study first traces several issues regarding the production of this hymn and then provides a hermeneutic examination of biblical, theological, and literary aspects of the text to find out Luther’s original intention in this hymn, especially the message for the church. As a result, it might provide the current Christians, facing spiritual crisis, some lessons and wisdom to rediscover the essence of the church as a community of Christ as well as to restore the joy of worship in our day. Originally written in four-stanza hymn inspired by Psalm 46, Luther conveys the confidence and comfort contemplated by the psalmist to the New Testament saints and today’s Christians in it. With Christ-centered view the author guides God’s people to live with a vision of victory and an eternal hope of the kingdom of God, emphasizing Jesus Christ, the Word, and the divine work of the Trinity. Through the repeated use of the first-person plural pronoun—we—in particular, it calls for the mission of the church as a life messenger who lives a life of sanctification with perseverance and proclaims the word of God as one unified community of Christ. In addition, the strong power and firm tone that radiates from this hymn doubled through Luther’s unique writing style and logical deliverance. Through a detailed analysis of the text, the song seems a hymn sermon by Luther synthesizing Christology, his view of the church, and the doctrine of God. It, therefore, should be properly sung as a Logos hymn sung by ‘we’, the Logos Church, confessing the communal faith of the one holy unified Church and proclaiming the Gospel.
