Abstract
udolfo Anaya is considered the most celebrated writer of contemporary Chicano literature. His first novel, Bless Me, Ultima (1972), based on his autobiographical experiences, is also regarded as a classic in Chicano/Latino literature and, more broadly, in American minority literature. The novel has garnered widespread acclaim and a broad readership. Set in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Anaya's novel is a coming-of-age story that depicts the spiritual journey of a Chicano boy narrator torn between Catholicism and mysticism. The boy’s growth presents an alternative paradigm of religious, cultural, and racial hybridity that transcends rigid, discriminatory boundaries of subordination and domination, reason and emotion, Catholicism and mysticism. This paper aims to explore Bless Me, Ultima through an ecofeminist lens, examining the interconnectedness of nature and culture, as well as female spirituality. Additionally, the paper reads the novel as an ecofeminist anti-war narrative that foregrounds the significance of diverse natural ecosystems.
