Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of total sleep deprivation on daytime sleepiness measured by MSLT and VAS/SSS. PARTICIPANTS : 10 healthy, normal young male college students participated in this study. Participating subjects were in good physical and psychological health and were asymtomatic as to sleep/wake complaints INTERVENTION : Subjects visited our laboratory by 08:30 at the first day, and they had baseline MSLT (from 09:00 to 17:00 at 2 hours' interval) while they had 5 naps during the day. Each time, the subjects completed VAS and SSS before they underwent an MSLT to evaluate their sleepiness. They spent the night without sleep at the laboratory. Next day, they repeated the same process as those of the first day. RESULT : As compared to baseline, subjects 1) had significantly shorter sleep latency, 2) had significantly more stage 2 sleep but less stage 1 sleep without significance, and 3) had significantly more subjective sleepiness after total sleep deprivation. CONCLUSION : Additional study is needed to correalte between subjective and objective measures of daytime sleepiness.
