자넷 풀의 『미래가 사라져갈 때』는 식민 말기의 한국문학을 거시적인 모더니즘의 시각에서 새롭게 살핀 논의라 할 수 있다. 그동안 한국 모더니즘 문학은 다양한 시각에서 논의되어 왔다. ‘한국 모더니즘’, ‘주변부 모더니즘’, ‘경성 모더니즘’, ‘구인회 모더니즘’ 등 다양한 명칭들이 사용된 것에서 알 수 있듯, 모더니즘에 대한 다양한 시각이 존재했지만 이들을 두루 아우르며 종합하려는 시도는 아직 나타나지 않았다. 그런 점에서 광의의 모더니즘의 시각에서 식민 말기의 한국 문학에 새로운 의미를 부여하는 자넷 풀의 연구는 학술적으로 큰 의의가 있다. 이 책은 자본주의, 사회주의, 파시즘 등의 이질적인 이데올로기를 아우르고, 리얼리즘과 모더니즘의 사조적 특징도 포괄하며, 시, 소설, 수필, 철학 등의 여러 장르도 모두 다룬다는 점에서 우리에게 거시적 시야를 확보할 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다. 그의 논의는 한국 모더니즘 문학 담론을 확장하고 좀더 거시적으로 살피는 것을 가능하게 하였다는 점에서 큰 의의가 있다. 그렇지만 그의 모더니즘 개념이 20세기 전반기의 거의 모든 문학ㆍ문화적 흐름들을 포괄할 수 있을 정도로 포괄적이라는 점은 문제적이다. 이 책은 완결되었다기보다는 새로운 문제의식을 제시한 연구라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Janet Pool‘s When the Future Disappears: The Modernist Imagination in Late Colonial Korea examines Korean literature at the end of the colonial period from a modernist perspective. Until now, Korean modernist literature has been discussed from various perspectives. As can be seen from the use of various names such as ’Korean modernism’, ‘Modernism at the margins’, ‘Kyongsong modernism’, and ‘modernism of 9 members’, there have been various views on modernism, but no attempt has yet emerged to synthesize them. In this regard, Janet Pool’s study, which gives a new meaning to Korean literature at the end of the colonial period from the modernist perspective in a broad sense, is of great significance. Janet Pool’s discussion on Korean modernism encompasses heterogeneous ideologies such as capitalism, socialism, and fascism, includes the literary features of realism and modernism, and also deals with various genres such as poetry, novels, essays, and philosophy. Her discussion makes it possible to expand the discourse of Korean modernism and examines it more macroscopically. However, it is problematic that his concept of modernism is comprehensive enough to cover almost all literary and cultural trends in the first half of the 20th century.
