Abstract
This book draws a new topographical map of the traces of the new time interval of modernism and how it negotiated with fascism and colonialism by analyzing various works written by Korean authors in the last decade of the colonial period. In the first section, I arranged the summary of each chapter: Chapter 1 shows how Choi Myŏng-ik’s psychological novels have been praised for its depiction of the details of everyday life. In chapter 2, it is pointed out that the socialist-turned-author Sŏ In-sik mobilizes narratives of nostalgia in his discussion of traditionalism. In Chapter 3, I analyze Yi Tae-jun’s essays to show that his taste for antiques is imbued with a certain nostalgia, and his travelogues to Manchuria with a melancholy for the sorrows of immigrant farmers. In Chapter 4, it is pointed out that the works of Yi Tae-jun and Pak Tae-won are developed in a spatial arrangement that separates the city from its outside. Chapter 5 explores the phase of the critic Choi Jae-sŏ and the Japanese critical journal Kookmin Munhak/Kokumin Bungak, and Chapter 6 shows that Im Hwa and Kim Saryang emphasized the role of Korean language as an imperial dialect. In section 2, I clarify the theoretical features of the book, and evaluate how considering the impact of the time interval of future disappearance on each writer leads to finding the point of contact between modernism and fascism. In section 3, I pointed out that the problem with this book is that the dynamics of its sense of time should be made clearer.
