한국 모더니즘 문학의 세계문학적 의의 -영어권 한국문학 연구자들의 주요 연구서를 중심으로

본 논문에서는 영어권 한국문학 연구자들이 분석한 한국 모더니즘 소설 논의를 집중적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 구체적으로 살피고자 하는 책은 손버의 Empire of Texts in Motion(2009), 한스콤의 The Real Modern(2013), 자넷 풀의 When the Future Disappears(2014), 박선영의 The Proletarian Wave(2015) 등이다. 한스콤은 한국의 국문학 담론에서 오랫동안 근대를 ‘리얼리즘’과 ‘모더니즘’의 이분법적 대립구도로 바라보아온 것에 근본적인 의문을 제기했다. 그리고 한국의 모더니즘 문학이 실제로는 ‘사실보다 더 사실적인’ 것을 보여주기 위한 역설적인 노력의 산물임을 역설한다. 자넷 풀은 1930년대 후반 제국 일본이 ‘군국주의 파시즘’으로 나아가게 됨에 따라 미래에 대한 전망이 사라지게 된 상황에서 한국 문학 작품들에 어떠한 형식적 변화가 발생하게 되었는가를 실증하고자 했다. 박선영의 논의는 모더니즘 문학에 관한 연구가 아니라 카프를 중심으로 한 한국 사회주의 리얼리즘 문학에 집중된 논의이다. 그렇지만 그는 카프와 구인회, 사회주의 리얼리즘과 모더니즘 문학이 공유하는 영역에 주목했다는 점에서 흥미롭다. 이러한 영어권 한국문학 연구는 국내의 ‘국문학’ 연구자들이 그동안 간과했거나 소홀히 다루었던, 한국 모더니즘 문학의 세계문학적 의미를 새롭게 찾아내고자 한다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
Abstract
This study attempts to look closely on debate of Korean modernism which was analyzed by Korean literature researchers from English-speaking world. Books that would like to specifically look at in this debate are Karen Laura Thornber’s Empire of Texts in Motion(2009), Christopher P. Hancom’s The Real Modern(2013), Janet Poole’s When the Future Disappers(2014), and Sunyoung Park’s The Proletarian Wave(2015) etc. Hanscom raised a fundamental question on Korean literature for treating the modern age as binary opposition between realism and modernism for a long time and emphasized that Korean modernism is the paradoxical product of effort to show ‘realer real’ in reality. Janet Poole tried to prove any formal changes occurred in Korean literature works in the late 1930s as the situation of future disappears following imperial Japan moved toward to Japanese fascism. Sunyoung Park’s debate is focused in Korean socialist realism literature centered on KAPF. However, it is interesting that he gives an eye to shared areas of socialist realism and modernism. Therefore, the study of Korean literature from English-speaking world is meaningful since it tried to find the significance of Korean modernism in world literature which was carelessly overlooked by Korean researchers.
