Abstract
The so-called mid-period esoteric Buddhist art of Silla, represented by the Vairocana Buddha statue in the mudra of Supreme Wisdom (jigwon-in), is often evaluated as unorthodox or as a uniquely Silla-style adaptation. This paper seeks to renew the understanding of Silla esoteric Buddhist art by critiquing the conventional practice of distinguishing between orthodoxy and non-orthodoxy based on 9th-century Japanese esoteric art, instead turning attention to phenomena in 8th-century Tang China and Silla. By examining the coexistence of esoteric rituals and concepts in 8th-century Silla works such as the Illuminated Manuscript of the Avatamsaka Sutra (755) and the Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha of Seoknamam-sa Temple Site in Sancheong (766), as well as the depiction of one-faced, four-armed wrathful deities on a stupa in the collection of the National Museum of Gyeongju, the paper highlights the subjectivity and dynamism of the 8th-century Silla Buddhist community. This community responded swiftly to changes in the Tang Buddhist world and proactively embraced and utilized esoteric iconography and concepts in a pioneering manner.
