Abstract
This paper examines the diverse manifestations of Esoteric Buddhist beliefs and rituals in eighth-century Silla Buddhist art, focusing on the seated Vairocana Buddha from Seoknamamsa, now enshrined at Deoksansa (formerly Naewonsa) in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do. The role of Esoteric Buddhism in Silla Buddhist art has long been underestimated. Even the Seoknamamsa Vairocana Buddha, which displays the bodhyagri mudrā (智拳印), the characteristic mudrā of the Mature Esoteric period, has often been regarded merely as an adoption of Esoteric iconography within the context of the Avataṃsaka (Huayan) tradition, with little genuine connection to Esoteric practice itself. This study argues, however, that the inscription of the Seoknamamsa Vairocana Buddha―“May all who see the image, hear of it, enter its shadow, or be touched by the wind that passes by it eradicate the karma leading to the three evil realms”―derives from dhāraṇī scriptures such as the Wugou jingguang da tuoluoni jing (無垢淨光⼤陀羅尼經), which were introduced and circulated in Silla during the eighth century. Furthermore, the coexistence of various elements observable in this statue―Huayan and Esoteric Buddhism, early and mature forms of Esotericism―reflects a broader characteristic of eighth-century Silla Buddhist art. Examples such as Seokguram, the Silla Manuscript of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, a relief from the stone pagoda brought from Gyeongju Fortress Town, and the Medicine Buddha images at Chilburam and Gulbulsa, as well as the account of the altar (壇) in the Samguk yusa, collectively demonstrate that Esoteric Buddhism in Silla was not confined to doctrinal or sectarian boundaries. Rather, it was widely represented and practiced in diverse forms―as both belief and ritual―throughout the artistic and religious culture of the time.
