Abstract

The purpose of present study is to critically assess, from the perspective of Reformed theology, the claims of support and tolerance toward homosexuality proposed by John Boswell in his highly acclaimed work, Christianity, Social Tolerance and Homosexuality. In his discussion regarding the definition of homosexuality, Boswell prefers to speak of ‘gay’ to ‘homosexual’ because the former is more inclusive than the latter. In pointing out the various kinds of homosexual activities, he proposes this activity is one of the natural behaviors of human beings. However, his claim of homosexuality being considered as natural behavior by Plato and Aristotle seems to be lacking persuasive power. As Boswell spent many portions of his opus magnum in arguing against the passages prohibiting homosexuality in the New Testament, many presented their critiques on Boswell’s interpretation of these texts. In this study, attention is given to the evaluation of his interpretation of the Old Testament texts such as Genesis 19, Leviticus 18 & 20. He argued against the traditional understanding on these texts affirming prohibition of homosexual behaviors. Many scholars, however, clearly pointed out these texts prohibiting homosexual behaviors between two males. Boswell’s historical study on homosexuality is heavily inclined toward the period of Middle ages. Yet he spent considerable pages in describing homosexual phenomena in Roman society dominated by urban culture. Under this assumption, Bowell claims that many church fathers showed tolerance toward homosexuality. However, in early Medieval period, the Empire became by large de-urbanized thus was rural. As a result, homosexual culture, flourished in ancient Roman society, was gradually declined. His main argument can be seen in his claim that for 100 years during the late Medieval period (1050-1150), gay subculture was revived. Boswell suggests this revival was a signal for revitalization of ancient Roman ideal for homosexuality. Boswell’s proposal, despite its merit, however, seems to be too schematic; it is based on the bifurcation of Roman urbanization and Medieval de-urbanization. In fact, presupposing this kind of scheme proves that Boswell had idealized homosexuality depicted in the ancient Roman society. In his consideration of penalization of homosexuals in the Medieval period, Boswell presumed the absence of any law penalizing the homosexuals simply meant the society in general was tolerant to homosexuality. Furthermore, he even presented many evidences showing homosexuality was widespred among clergies. However, the church had officially taken position condemning homosexuality as behavior unnatural since 1150. Seen from the entire period of the Middle ages, Boswell’s claim that society and church in general had taken a tolerant stance towards homosexuality cannot be validated. Instead of showing an attitude of tolerance, it seems true that society and church had shown either lack of interest (450-1000) or intolerance towards homosexuality.
