메소디스트 부흥운동의 쇠퇴에 대한 분석은 여러 교회 지도자와 신학자에 의해 이루어지고 있다. 이러한 분석은 한결같이 메소디스트 부흥운동의 결과로서 교단과 신학 기관은 존재하나, 신자의 삶과 교회 강단의 선포, 메소디스트 단체의 활동 전반에서 부흥운동은 심각할 정도로 쇠퇴했고 심지어 소멸되었다는 진단을 반복한다. 한 때 큰 힘과 에너지로 교회와 사회의 갱신에 기여했던 메소디스트 부흥운동은 어떤 역사적 과정을 거쳐 그 특징과 영향력을 상실해 부흥운동의 소멸이라는 암울한 결론에 이르게 되었는가? 이 연구는 메소디스트 부흥운동의 쇠퇴와 소멸의 원인을 살펴보고 그 회복의 방안을 제안하기 위한 것이다. 이 연구는 첫째, 18세기 메소디스트 부흥운동이, 19세기 웨슬리안 성결운동을 거쳐, 현재의 소멸에 이르기까지 그 신학과 실천에 어떤 왜곡과 변형과 축소가 있었는지 고찰했다. 이를 위해 18세기 메소디스트 부흥운동과 19세기 성결운동, 그리고 그 이후 메소디스트와 웨슬리안 신학과 실천의 변화의 추이를 추적했다. 이 연구는 메소디스트 부흥운동 쇠퇴에 대한 분석을 토대로, 부흥운동의 특징과 영향력 회복의 가능성을 모색한다. 그 가능성 모색은, 가장 기본적으로 메소디스트 신학의 측면, 메소디스트 정신의 측면, 메소디스트 실천의 측면 등 다각도로 이루어진다.
Abstract
Analysis of the decline of the Methodist revival movement has been done by several church leaders and theologians. In 1994, Dr. Keith Drury, the leader of the Wesleyan Church, declared the death of the Methodist Revival movement at the Christian Holiness Association conference, causing a great sensation. In 1999, Nazarene theologian Dr. Richard Taylor published an article titled “Why the Holiness Movement Died” in God's Revivalist. Also, Wesley scholar Dr. Kenneth Collins contributed an analysis to the Asbury Theological Journal, “Why the Holiness Movement Is Dead.” These analyzes consistently repeat the diagnosis that denominations and theological institutions exist as a result of the Methodist revival movement, but the revivalism in the life of believers, the proclamation of the church pulpit, and the activities of Methodist organizations in general has seriously declined and even ceased to exist. Through what historical process did the Methodist revivalism, which once contributed to the renewal of the church and society with great strength and energy, lose its characteristics and influence, leading to the gloomy conclusion that the revivalism ceased to exist? This study is to examine the causes of the decline and annihilation of the Methodist revival movement and to suggest a method for its recovery. First, this study examines what distortions, transformations and reductions occurred in the theology and practice of the Methodist Revival movement in the 18th century and the Wesleyan Holiness Movement in the 19th century, leading to the current extinction. Second, based on the analysis of the decline of the Methodist revival movement, the possibility of restoring the characteristics of the revival movement and its influence is explored. The search for the possibility is made from various angles such as the aspect of Methodist theology, the aspect of Methodist spirit, and the aspect of Methodist practice.
