Abstract

This study examines the “revolution-love” narrative in proletarian novels of Korea and China during the 1920s and 1930s, a period when national liberation movements and the discourse of free love intersected in modern society. It focuses on how the public imperative of “revolution” and the private desire for “love” clashed, merged, and were represented in literature. While Chinese literary circles systematically established the “revolution + love” narrative as a distinct narrative type, Korean literary discourse on love remained dispersed across multiple dimensions, including sentiment, gender, and aesthetics. Attending to this difference, the study analyzes the similarities and divergences in the formation of the “revolution-love” narrative in the two literatures and reassesses, within the Korean context, both the potential and the practical dilemmas of this discourse. The study examines the historical and literary conditions that shaped the “revolution-love” narrative and classifies its modes into three types: ‘the failure of love and revolutionary awakening’, ‘attempts to merge ideology and sentiment’, and ‘irreconcilable conflict and choice’. Major texts analyzed include Jang Guangci’s Wild Sacrifice (蔣光慈, 「野祭」) and Yi Ki-yeong’s Reunion (이기영, 「해후」), Hu Yepin’s To Moscow (胡也頻, 「到莫斯科去」) and Cho Myong-hui’s Nakdong River (조명희, 「낙동강」), as well as Ding Ling’s Wei Hu (丁玲, 「韋護」) and Kang Kyong-ae’s The Human Problem (강경애, 『인간문제』). The analysis shows that while the two literatures shared historical trajectories and displayed commonalities in narrative structure, symbolism, and gender consciousness, they diverged in significant ways: Korean proletarian literature, rooted in rural settings, employed metaphorical techniques to recast romance as a device for class struggle, whereas Chinese proletarian literature, centered on urban contexts, adopted slogans and propagandistic narration in which revolution overshadowed romance. By reassessing the potential and limitations of the “revolution-love” discourse in Korean literature, this study offers a critical reflection on the challenges of colonial modernity and contributes to broadening the horizon of Korean literary studies and East Asian comparative literature.
