Abstract

The meaning of the public in the modern mass society covers the concept which is sharply distinguished from the ruling class gaining power in politics, economics and culture. The public are defined as an object with the potential possibility to be integrated as the masses who stand against the power group in that they are distinguished from the nature of lots of their desires and the connection of their own struggles. From the perspective of social psychology, the public may be considered the indivisible substance with the history of human beings because they have not suddenly appeared as the privileged class. Consequently, the public emerges as the substance from their aspiration to overcome the imprisonment of historic reality and the limits of caste system, transcending their domains. Most of all, the domain of the masses transforms the central figures of daily lives for the minority in the past into their own desires, and then produces an abundant possibility in the period and an infinite expansion of the vital force. The mass society derived from the public reveals the popularity in a state of absent traditional authority and entails the reorganizational structural change of the social order based on the conscious orientation of the masses. This social aspect suggests a society state of the openness for the ruling class because it reflects a social structure eradicating the preponderance and mystery of knowledge, information and authority by the small number elite. The content of “Jung-Dok-Ja-Moon” in Ahn Gook Sun's collected short stories Gong-Jin-Hoe suggests not only the emergence of the modern mass society but also the movement distinguished from the literary device of the previous narrative creation in the cognitive dimension of the popularity. A remarkable change is that the novel overcomes the biographic character-driven narrative of novels of wits and beauties and the perspective of an inflexible narrative composed of a social criticism and a satire on society. This fact suggests that the novel reveals the feature of a storyteller expert rather than a reasonable instruction or the development of the story is transformed into the story of the daily lives. Accordingly, given that the beginning of Gong-Jin-Hoe is based on the class of readers, it becomes evident that the awareness of the popularity in the work appears as the central figures of the narrative in a variety of daily lives of the common people in a society.
