Abstract

Chwimi and Development of Korean Modern Popular Culture;Cheon, Jung-Hwan & Lee, Yong-Nam The present study, by exploring the process by which ch’wimi(趣味), curently meaning “hobby” or “taste”, came into being in Korea during the Japanese colonial period, intends to investigate the phases in which modern popular culture developed and differentiated. Because ch’wimi was a project conected with culture and reconstruction, to people in the 1920s ch’wimi was one of item of enlightenment. Thus ch’wimi and culture overlap. The context that gave rise to the discourse of ch’wimi in the 1920s was the formation of modern popular culture and the diferentiation of knowledge. The inequality that followed capitalist development created the diferentiation of ch’wimi. Once ch’wimi came into being and spread widely, ‘high & elegant’ things and ‘low & vulgar’ things also came into existence. This phenomenon shows the hybridity of colonial culture and the reorganization of cultural and physical sensibilities created by the “new things” imported from the Western and Japan. This structure of sensibilities is completed by the 1930s. Because modern popular culture and ‘the popular-knowledge’ arouse, the Socialist Artists projected ‘Popularization of Art’.
