Abstract
This paper analyzes how the literary popularization movement in the early 1990s recognized ‘mass(es)’ and ‘popular culture’ and explores traces of the movement’s attempts to negotiate and intervene in the process of change in popular culture of the time. For this work, this paper mainly reviewed ‘Sasang Literary Movement’, ‘Hangil Literature’ , which were published in 1989 and 1990, respectively, and ‘Silcheon Literature’, which was a representative MOOC magazine in the 1980s and was later converted into a quarterly magazine.of its intervention in that process. These three magazines placed special features related to the ‘popularization of literary arts’ in the early 1990s, and the articles sparked the debate on postmodernism and also contained critical awareness that would become the basis of ‘cultural studies’ and ‘popular art studies’ that became full-fledged after the 1990s. This paper examines how the discourse related to the ‘literary popularization movement’ in these magazines perceived ‘mass(es)’ and ‘popular culture’, and attempted to explore how the critical awareness expressed in these magazines is linked to the culture that the ‘mass(es)’ is creating today.
