Abstract

The Season of Shadows (2013) by Leonora Miano is a novel that recounts the history of the slave trade. However, it is not limited to a simple critique of the slave trade carried out by Western imperialism, but rather offers a complex narrative in which the author recounts several layers of anecdotes about the slave trade. She describes not only the relationship between African tribes and white people, but also the relationship between African tribes and the suffering of the surviving families of those enslaved. We can see that the daily lives of the tribes were completely changed by the destruction of human and non-human life. We first analyze that the slave trade was a direct act of violence against Black people. The text thus reveals in detail the arrival of white people in Africa and the paths of obedience of African tribes: the Mulongo, the Bwele, and the Isedu. We also discover the slow violence that gradually attacks the daily life of man and nature, that is, the destruction not only of the human realm but also of the non-human one. Nevertheless, the author offers a glimmer of hope for the future of the Bebayedi people, who were forced to live together due to the slave trade and involuntary migration, even if they are victims of slow violence.
