Abstract

‘The Review Meeting of the party life in North Korea’ resembles religious ritual. It is unique ritual in the world and very routine meeting in North Korea that all the people in North Korea must participate in their life span, at least once a week. It is held during week days for the most part, except for some executives of the Korean Works Party, artists and farmers. Some executives of the Korean Works Party and artists must hold the review meeting of the party life in 2-day period and farmers in 10-day period accordingly. They usually take part in the review meeting by a group of ten to fifteen persons at a time. It starts with proclaiming instructions of Kim Il Sung or words of Kim Jung Il. Every participators have to speak of self-criticism and criticize another person one after another in turn. They have to criticize against their personal habits that are related to the reflection on instructions of Kim Il Sung or words of Kim Jung Il or policies of the party in principal. Toward the end of the meeting, the leader of the review meeting judges the disputed points and participants. When needed, the criticized persons are given a warning, an official reprimand and so on. The review meeting of the party life in North Korea were formalized in 1962. Kim Il Sung had seriously conflicted with the Soviet Union in those days. He had to tighten the control of North Korea in ideological strife and the party life. Kim Jung Il had intensified the review meeting in 1973 in which heredity of the power had been being completed and the South-North Red Cross conference had broken down. Kim Jung Il also had to tighten the control of North Korea more and more. It verified that the review meeting was formalized to prevent the internal disruption and to block the external erosion. In this thesis, the ritual theory was applied to this meeting. The ritual reproduces the holy values in the society and contributes to integration of the society. The review meeting of the party life in North Korea reproduces ‘the uni-idea of great leader in North Korea’ and contributes to justification of the power and integration of the North Korea society.
