문학에서의 역사와 반(反)역사 - 이기영의 『고향』을 중심으로

초록

근대적 시간관과 역사관은 이십세기 한국사회의 모든 영역에서 변혁을 위한 노력의 기본 조건이 되었다. 문학과 정치의 경우, 진화론적 역사관은 근대적 발전의 중요한 사상 원천이었다. 이것은 계몽주의에서만이 아니라 계몽주의에 대립적인 것처럼 보이는 사회주의에서도 사실이다. 1920년대 한국 사회주의 사상은 엥겔스와 사카이 도시히코 계열의 역사유물론의 짙은 영향하에 있었다. 그러나 그것이 한국의 과거와 미래에 대한 인텔리겐차들의 사유 속에서 단순히 유럽중심적 역사를 재생하고 있었던 것은 아니다. 이기영의 고향을 면밀하게, 그리고 거슬러 읽어보면 그것이 대역사의 종주 서사를 대체 놀이의 방식으로 부연하고 있는 동시에 그것을 내부적으로 파열시키고 있음이 드러난다. 역사주의의 모순은 두 작중인물, 김희준과 김선달이 비대칭적으로 구현하고 있는 두 종류의 실천을 통해 표출된다. 그들은 정치적 동지의 외양 아래 계몽과 놀이, 크로노스적 시간과 카이로스적 시간, 이데올로기적 충만과 유토피아적 아나키를 각각 대표한다. 서양의 헤게모니를 재생산하는 역사주의에 대해 반항적일 수밖에 없는 한국사회의 무의식은 『고향』이라는, 그 식민지 조선의 표상 방식에서 현저하게 역사주의적인 소설에서 가장 돌올한 표현 중 하나를 얻었다.

Abstract

Modern notions of time and history provided a condition for the reformative and revo-lutionary efforts in all the areas of twentieth-century Korean society. In both literature and politics, progressive historicism constituted a intellectual source of modern developments. This is the case with the enlightenment thought, as well as with socialism, which seems to have opposed it. Socialist thought in the 1920s Korea was deeply influ-enced by historical materialism in the line of Friedrich Engels and Sakai Toshihiko, but it did not simply end up reiterating a Euro-centric idea of History. A close and against-the-grain reading of Yi Kiyŏng’s Kohyang reveals that the novel replays the master narrative of History in the manner of un jeu de substitutions and, simultaneously, produces its implosions. The contradictions of historicism express themselves in two kinds of prac-tice which two characters, Kim Hŭichun and Kim Sŏndal, conduct in an asymmetrical way. They represent the enlightenment and play, chronos and kairos, an ideological plen-itude and an utopian anarchy respectively, under their appearance of political comrade. I think that Korean social unconscious, inevitably resistant against historicism that re-produces the Western hegemony, finds one of its most prominent expressions in Kohyang, a work of fiction that seems emphatically historicist in its way of representing colonial Korea.
