Abstract
This paper examines the possibilities for perceptual dramaturgy to enhance the subjectivity of performers and audiences, intensify performers’ presence, and improve communication efficiency. This paper suggests activating the perceptual experience in composition, performing, and audience communication. First, this paper analyzes the function of perception, how to activate perception, and learn about the construction process and method. Also, this paper examines the core concepts of phenomenology and cognitive studies that use the body as the site of meaning generation. It then links them to the composition method of the performance. This paper intends to suggest the possibility of perceptual dramaturgy based on such theoretical discussion. This paper discusses how to capture the presentness during a performance and how to communicate it to the audience. Can the words generate "vibration in the human body" through the performer's body, and can he share this with the audience? How can the performer awaken empathy with the audience to enhance the feeling that they share their life rather than the copy? How can the audience understand the meaning of the performance when the dialogue does not entirely compose the meaning? With these questions, this paper explores the possibility of constructing perceptual dramaturgy through interdisciplinary discussions with philosophy, science, and theatre.
