Abstract
With the widespread proliferation of digital platforms and the deep integration of algorithmic mechanisms, the logic of image circulation, structures of consumption, and cultural meanings in contemporary society are undergoing rapid reconfiguration. This study argues that Instagram, OpenSea, and Google Arts & Culture do not operate in isolation but collectively form a massive “image capital pipeline” that systematically transforms the value of digital images. To analyze the workings of this pipeline, this study proposes two core analytical concepts: “digital aura,” which explains how platforms artificially engineer scarcity through technology, and “algorithmic distinction,” which refers to the power mechanisms through which algorithms construct hierarchies of visibility. To illuminate the functional linkages and the continuity of value transformation across platforms, this study combines a comparative case study with secondary data analysis. The analysis reveals that images follow an “image lifecycle” model, progressing through the stages of “attention accumulation → assetization → cultural canonization.” It was confirmed through data that behind the “democratization” discourse promoted by each platform lie hidden disciplinary mechanisms that extract multi-layered value from user activities. By integrating theoretical argumentation with empirical data analysis, this research aims to provide a novel analytical framework and a critical perspective for understanding the media ecology and value circulation pathways of digital images in the era of platform capitalism.
