본 연구는 디지털 플랫폼 환경에서 시각 콘텐츠가 작동하는 복합적인 방식을 비판적으로 분석하기 위한 새로운 이론적 모델을 구축하고 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존의 재매개, 수행성, 신유물론 연구가 플랫폼의 다층적 현실을 설명하는 데 분절적으로 적용되어 온 분석적 공백을 극복하기 위해, 이 논문은 ‘수행적 재매개화(Performative Remediation)’ 모델을 제시한다. 이 모델은 볼터와 그루신의 ‘재매개화’, 버틀러의 ‘수행성’, 신유물론의 ‘재물질화’ 개념을 스튜어트 홀의 ‘접합(articulation)’ 이론을 통해 하나의 통합된 순환 구조로 연결한다. 본 연구는 ‘수행적 재매개화’ 모델이 [재매개 → 수행성 → 재물질화 → 데이터화] 라는 순환적 과정을 통해 작동함을 논증한다. 이 모델의 분석적 유용성을 입증하기 위해, SNS, AI 생성 이미지, AR 필터 등의 사례를 플랫폼 권력이 작동하는 ‘규범적 접합’과 이에 맞서는 사용자의 저항 실천인 ‘대항적 접합’이라는 두 가지 축으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 플랫폼의 지배 권력(예: 이상적 셀피)과 사용자의 저항(예: 밈, 난독화)이 모두 ‘수행적 재매개화’라는 같은 메커니즘을 공유하며 대항하는 변증법적 과정임이 드러났다. 본 연구가 제시하는 ‘수행적 재매개화’ 모델은 기술 결정론과 사회 결정론의 이분법을 넘어, 기술·권력·주체가 얽히는 동시대 시각 문화를 총체적으로 분석할 수 있는 새로운 인식론적 관점을 제공한다는 점에서 학문적 의의를 지닌다.
Abstract
This study aims to construct and propose a new theoretical model for critically analyzing the complex operational dynamics of visual content in the digital platform environment. To overcome the analytical gap left by previous studies that have applied theories of performativity, remediation, and new materialism in a fragmented manner, this paper presents the “Performative Remediation” model. This model integrates Judith Butler’s “performativity,” Bolter and Grusin’s “remediation,” and the new materialist concept of “re-materialization” into a unified, cyclical structure through Stuart Hall’s theory of “articulation.” This study argues that the “Performative Remediation” model operates through a cyclical process of [Remediation → Performativity → Re-materialization → Datafication]. To demonstrate the model's analytical utility, this paper analyzes cases from SNS, AI-generated imagery, and AR filters along two axes: “normative articulation,” through which platform power operates, and “counter-articulation,” which represents user practices of resistance. The analysis reveals a dialectical process wherein both the dominant power of platforms (e.g., the ideal selfie) and user resistance (e.g., memes, obfuscation) share and contend within the same mechanism of “performative remediation.” The “Performative Remediation” model holds academic significance by offering a new epistemological perspective that moves beyond the dichotomy of technological and social determinism. It provides a holistic framework for analyzing the entanglement of technology, power, and subjectivity in contemporary visual culture.
