Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the interlocking operation of the authenticated self and algorithmic governmentality, focusing on the process by which smartphone-based social media transforms everyday life into a ‘digital non-place’. To this end, it draws on Marc Augé's ‘non-place’, Hiroki Azuma's ‘parasitic anxiety’ and ‘probabilistic ontology’, Michel Foucault's ‘autopoiesis’ and ‘biopolitics’, and Zygmunt Bauman's concept of ‘fluid identity’. In digital non-places, Homo mobilicus, possessing mobility that allows access anytime, anywhere, exhibits and manages themselves on social media like Instagram. They are exposed to psychological pressure to have their existence validated through quantitative metrics generated by algorithms, such as ‘likes’, follower counts, and reach rates. Instagram users appear to voluntarily optimize popular hashtags and content formats, aligning themselves within the platform's classification system to freely express themselves. Yet in reality, they are reconfigured as ‘subjects of conditioned autonomy,’ adjusting themselves within a probabilistic space designed by data-driven prediction and recommendation algorithms. This study confirms that digital non-places reorganize time and space around the momentary authentication of ‘here and now,’ while algorithmic governance operates as a form of statistical power that finely tunes subjects' choices and affect through the chain of visibility, comparison, and self-management. Consequently, the subject's identity transforms into a constantly updated fluid project, and the authenticated self can be understood as a new form of subjectivity emerging at the intersection of digital non-places and algorithmic governance. Therefore, the findings of this study reveal that education on digital literacy and algorithms can provide a theoretical foundation for critically understanding social media as a field of governance that constitutes and manages subjects.
