본고는 아동문학 작품에서 자주 발견되는 모티프로서의 가족 그리고 학교라는 배경을 중심으로 작중인물이 겪게 되는 아동과 어른과의 소통의 어려움, 그리고 인해 발생하는 적절한 관계 형성의 문제점을 우회적으로 보여주고 있다. 이 작품의 주인공 데니스가 겪게 되는 어른과의 문제는 양자 간의 소통 부재로 인해 발생되고, 나아가 주인공 데니스와 그들 사이의 관계 단절을 초래하게 만든다. 데니스의 아빠와 교장 선생님은 남자아이에게는 어울리지 않는 보그 잡지 읽기, 드레스 입기를 좋아하는 데니스를 이해하지 못한다. 그들은 데니스의 이러한 관심을 자신들이 정해 놓은 규칙과 규율에 맞지 않는다고 생각하며, 그의 관심을 무시한다. 그리고 그 안에서 데니스는 자신의 정체성에 관한 고민을 하게 된다. 많은 아동문학 작품에서 아동 인물들이 겪는 정체성 갈등은 매우 수동적이다. 즉 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 자신이 어떤 존재인지 궁금해 하지만, 능동적으로 탐색하고, 획득하려는 의지는 부족하다. 더 나아가 오히려 주변인들, 예를 들어, 부모 또는 학교 선생님들의 지휘 아래 자신의 정체성이 만들어진다고 볼 수 있다. 그들이 어른으로 대표되는 부모, 선생님들의 세계를 변화시켜 자신의 정체성을 스스로 형성시키는 것이 아니라 그들에 의해 부여받게 되고, 받아들이게 된다. 이러한 이유로 아동문학 작품에 등장하는 많은 아동 인물들이 자신의 정체성에 대한 탐구에 다소 수동적인 태도를 보이고 있다. 그리고 이러한 정체성에 대한 의문은 결국 가족에서의 단절, 학교에서의 단절을 초래하게 된다. 정리하면, 관계의 단절을 유발하는 것은 정체성에 대한 의문에서 비롯된다는 것이다. 그러나 본고의 분석 대상인 『드레스 입은 스트라이커』는 이러한 양상에 대한 의구심을 제기하며, 나아가 이러한 문제를 유머러스한 방식으로 해소시키고 있다. 일반적으로 가족관계, 학교에서 형성되는 관계 단절로 인해 발생 되는 고민이 어른의 목소리와 권한 아래에서 해결되는데, 『드레스 입은 스트라이커』의 주인공 데니스는 오히려 자신이 주변 인물 변화의 중심적 위치를 차지하며, 자신의 정체성 탐구에 대한 보다 능동적인 태도를 보여주고 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the aspects of estrangement in the relationship between children and adults are revealed in The Boy in the Dress. Questions about estrangement between children and adults have been explored through the traditional and modern children's literature. However, the resolution of such questions tends to follow a typical pattern. Main characters facing unstable relationships within their families and at school often overcome these challenges with the assistance of adult characters. While not an absolute rule, this pattern is frequently repeated in the majority of children’s literary works. It often reinforces the idea that children should adhere to adults’ rules to resolve issues of estrangement and relationships. However, The main character, Dennis, adopts an active approach and intention to confront these problems. He assumes a central role in instigating change among the other characters, Consequently, this paper examines the distinctive aspects presented in The Boy in the Dress in contrast to typical children’s literary works.
