본 연구는 맥아더, 워커, 김종오 장군과 함께 6·25전쟁 4대 전쟁영웅 중 한 명으로 선정된 김홍일 장군의 6·25전쟁기 군사적·제도적 역할을 다각적으로 고찰하고, 전쟁영웅으로서의 역사적 위상을 재조명하고자 한다. 독립운동가 출신으로 대한민국 국군 창설에 중대한 역할과 기여를 한 김홍일 장군이지만, 6·25전쟁 중 그의 군사적 공적에 대한 평가는 상대적으로 소외되었고후속 연구도 진행되어 있지 않다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 김홍일 장군이 시흥지구전투사령부 편성 및 한강 방어선 구축 등에서의 전략적 기여를 통해 개전초기 낙동강방어선을 구축할 수 있었던 단초를 제공하였고 향후 국군의 제도적 기반 마련, 뛰어난 리더십 발휘 등을 중심으로 김홍일 장군의 실질적인 역할을 분석하고자 한다. 또한, 같은 시기 전쟁영웅들과의 비교·분석을 통해 김홍일 장군의 상대적 위상과 상징적 의미를 정리하고, 전쟁영웅 개념의 형성과 변천 과정을 고찰하고자 한다. 이 연구는 한국 군사사(軍事史) 속 영웅 서사 구조를 재정립하고, 역사적 정당성과 군 리더십의 본질을 이해하는데 기여할 것이다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the military and institutional role of General Kim Hong-il, who was selected as one of the four major heroes of the Korean War along with General MacArthur, Walker, and Kim Jong-oh, from various angles, and to re-examine his historical status as a war hero. General Kim Hong-il, a former independence activist who played a significant role and contributed to the creation of the Korean Armed Forces, was relatively marginalized in evaluating his military achievements during the Korean War and no follow-up studies have been conducted. Therefore, this study aims to analyze General Kim Hong-il's practical role in establishing the Nakdonggang River defense line in the early stages of the war through strategic contributions to the formation of the Si-heung District Combat Command and the establishment of the Han River Defense War. In addition, through comparative analysis with war heroes during the same period, the relative status and symbolic meaning of General Kim Hong-il are summarized, and the formation and transition process of the concept of war heroes is examined. This study will re-establish the narrative structure of heroes in Korean military history and contribute to understanding historical legitimacy and the nature of military leadership.
