Abstract

This study examines the major trends and characteristics of Korean academic research on the Korean War in the twenty-first century. Moving beyond the traditional focus on political, diplomatic, and military history, recent scholarship has expanded into social, cultural, and everyday life perspectives, with oral history and regional studies shedding light on the lived experiences and memories of ordinary people. The disclosure of archival materials from Russia, the United States, and China since the 1990s enabled new interpretations and stimulated empirical studies on topics such as civilian massacres, refugee policies, and local community transformations. While debates over the outbreak of the war have largely concluded with the confirmation of North Korea’s preemptive invasion, current scholarship tends to adopt a synthetic approach that incorporates both civil war and international war perspectives. Since the 2000s, research on the armistice agreement, the armistice system, and the transition to a peace regime has deepened, linking the Korean War to the structural legacies of the Cold War order in East Asia. Military history studies have also diversified, moving beyond battle narratives to include military policy, irregular warfare, and air campaigns, alongside expanded research on veterans’ testimonies and the excavation of war remains. Academic conferences marking the 50th, 60th, and 70th anniversaries of the war and the armistice reflect shifts in research agendas shaped by inter-Korean relations and the international context of each period.
