초록
This paper investigates Marie de France, an Anglo-Norman aristocratic woman author who is known to have written the Lais, the Fables, and St. Patrick’s Purgatory in the second half of the twelfth century, as a medieval woman intellectual. Close readings of Marie’s three works manifest the marks of her reflections and criticism as a sensitive and responsible writer and intellectual on a wide range of issues that the twelfthcentury Norman feudal aristocracy in England, where she herself belonged, disclosed regarding class, status, power, gender, and other socio-cultural customs and institutions. Conceptualizing Marie de France as an intellectual who disapproves the oppressive ideologies and practices of the ruling class and is sympathetic with less privileged and underrepresented classes has been influenced principally by what the two great twentieth-century thinkers Jean-Paul Sartre and Edward Said stated about what it means to be intellectuals.
