이 논문은 웰빙(well-being) 관점에서 공자의 음식관을 『논어』 「향당」편을 중심으로 고찰한 글이다. 주지하다시피 공자는 2500여년의 인물로 당시로서는 매우 드물게 73세까지 장수하였다. 공자의 장수 비결은 그가 평소 음식에 대한 ‘위생관념’과 ‘절제관념’, 그리고 ‘음식의 조화’를 추구한 데서 기인한다고 하겠다. 그는 저잣거리에서 산 음식을 먹지 않았으며, 고기가 아무리 많아도 밥보다 많이 먹지 않았으며, 간이 맞지 않은 음식도 먹지 않을 만큼 위생과념과 함께 음식에 대한 절제와 조화를 추구하였다. 이러한 공자의 음식관은 오늘날 웰빙과도 밀접한 관련이 있다. 과거에는 먹을 것이 절대 부족해서 문제였다면, 오늘날에는 나라마다 차이는 있을지라도 상대적으로 먹을 것이 너무 흔해 또 다른 문제를 야기시키고 있다. 우리나라도 예외는 아니다. 요즘 성인은 말할 것도 없이 청소년, 심지어 아동 비만도 사회문제 중의 하나라고 하겠다. 우리가 먹는 음식은 생명과 건강을 유지시키기 위한 존재의 필수 조건이다. 그러나 지나친 음식의 섭취는 오히려 건강을 해치는 필요악이라고 할 수 있다. 그래서 요즘 웰빙음식이라는 신조어가 등장한 것이다. 최근에는 ‘개인의 건강이나 웰빙에 대한 관심을 넘어 사회의 건강이나 웰빙도 함께 모색하자’는 로하스(LOHAS)적 삶의 트렌드가 확산되고 있다. 2500여년 전 공자가 추구한 음식관은 로하스는 아니더라도 오늘날 웰빙적 관점에서 보면 매우 바람직한 음식습관이었다고 하겠다.
Abstract
This article is about Confucius’ Thought of Food in the Viewpoint of well-being focusing on the chapter Xiǎngtáng of the Analects of Confucius. As many know, Confucius was a feature living about 2500 years ago but he lived a long life of 73 years unlike the others in his time. It may be the secret of his such long life that he had tried to live for his thought of hygiene & self-control and harmonization of food. He did not eat anything bought on the streets, more meat than rice even when meat was more than rice at a meal and not-well seasoned food, which indicates how much he sought for self-control and harmonization of food as well as a good thought of hygiene. Such viewpoint of meals of Confucius is closely related with the well-being of today. In the past, it was the problem that there was not enough food. Today, however, too much food is blamed on some social problems although there are differences among countries. Korea is not an exception. Today, obesity is one of social problems not only to adults but also to the youth even to children. Every food we eat is vital to our life and health. However, eating too much food is rather bad to harm health. Such neologism as well-being food has appeared under this circumstance of today. Recently, the thought of well-being has come over the interest in individual person’s health and well-being to the life style of seeking public health and well-being too, which is LOHAS. The thought of meal sought by Confucius 2500 years ago may not be LOHAS but it was a very recommendable eating habit from the viewpoint of well-being of today.
