먹는 것의 역사는 인류의 발생과 함께 시작하여 지금도 쉼 없이 이어지고 있는 인간의 본능적 활동이자 사회적 행위 그 자체이다. 윤리학이 우리들의 사고 및 행동과 관련되는 실천적 물음들에 대한 답변을 제공하기 위한 원리의 탐구라면 먹는 행위일반을 다루는 이른바 ‘음식윤리(food ethics)’의 출현은 지극히 당연한 귀결인 것처럼 보인다. 이 글은 그와 같은 인식의 연장선상에서 음식윤리의 중요성을 개괄적으로 살펴보는 가운데 불교의 음식윤리문화에 대한 윤리적 이해를 도모하고 있다. 예컨대, 불교에서는 육식을 엄격하게 금지하고 있는 것으로 알려져 있지만 실제로는 육식자체의 반대가 아니라 주어진 음식의 성격과 그것을 받아먹는 수행자의 자세를 문제 삼고 있는 것에 지나지 않는다. 이러한 불교의 음식윤리문화는 이른바 중도주의적 음식윤리로 성격규정될 수 있을 것이라고 본다. 논의의 과정에서 우리는 자연스럽게 서양윤리학에서 발달한 동물권리 개념과 채식주의의 윤리적 정당화 가능성에 대한 다양한 시각을 조망할 수 있게 되기를 기대한다. 이 글에서 무엇보다도 웰빙(well-being)시대의 최대수혜자인 현대인들이 음식의 생산과 유통 및 소비의 전체 구조를 윤리적으로 성찰하고 더 나아가 그것과 관련된 종합적 가치판단을 할 수 있는 능력의 배양을 강조하고자 했다. 이 글은 음식윤리가 말 그대로 학제간연구의 전형적인 사례임을 일깨우는 한편, 오늘날 너도나도 웰빙을 추구하는 삶을 살고 있는 대부분의 사람들이 불교의 음식윤리전통으로부터 무엇을 배워야 할 것인가에 대한 도덕적 관심의 환기를 주문하고 있다.
Abstract
The history of eating is an instinctive activity and a social behavior of humans that began together with the birth of humanity and that has continued since then. If we consider the study of ethics to be a search of the principles behind behavior for providing answers to the practical questions related to our thoughts and actions, it seems that the emergence of ‘food ethics,’ which deals with the behavior of eating is an obvious consequence. As an extension from this line of thought, and taking a general look at the importance of food ethics, this essay strives for an ethical understanding of the food ethics culture of Buddhism. For instance, it is widely understood that eating meat is strictly forbidden in Buddhism, but in reality, this is no more than calling into question the character of the given food and the attitude of a trainee who takes it, rather than opposing the act of eating meat itself. Such food ethics culture of Buddhism could be defined as what is called a centrist food ethics. In the process of our discussion, we expect to obtain diverse views on the concept of animal rights that were developed in Western ethics and on the possibility of ethical justification of vegetarianism. In this essay, I wants the modern people, who are the biggest beneficiaries of this age of well-being, to explore the whole system of the production, distribution, and consumption of food from an ethical viewpoint, and to step further and cultivate the ability to make a comprehensive value judgment on these matters. However, we are truly fortunate in that we believe that if people become aware of the fact that they can find reasonable and practical principles regarding these matters from the centrist food ethics culture of Buddhism, they will acutely understand how the teachings of the Buddha is still progressive in the present. On one hand, this essay will enlighten the readers on how food ethics is literally a classic example of interdisciplinary research, and on the other, it demands the arousal of moral interest on what could be learned from the food ethics tradition of Buddhism for most of the people who pursue well-being in the present world. However, it should be frankly acknowledged that my essay only shows various critical views related to food ethics, and is limited by its contemporary character in many aspects. Regarding this point, modifications and supplementation will be made as far as opportunity allows.
