Abstract
The poetry of the troubadours is significant in that it sought and established one of the basic foundations of European poetry. The rise of fin’amor in which the troubadours played a crucial role helped to shape mainstream Western literature. This paper reexamines the characteristics of the vidas(biography) which talks about the lives of southern French poets, and the razos(reason) which tells the context in which their poems were created. The main focus of this study was to understand how vidas and razos are specifically correlated with or differentiated from the Troubadour’s poetry. Our review was to examine in detail how the ‘poetic sensibility’ of vidas and razos reconstructed through imagination guides our understanding of the troubadours’ poetry. From this perspective, we first reviewed the basic features of the vidas and razos, focusing more on Bernard de Ventadour and Gaucelm Faidit. It was confirmed that razos is not a critical analysis of the poem, but a ‘familiar story’ method. In other words, it is a ‘rewriting’ that uses a kind of anecdote to specify and highlight the troubadour’s intention. In short, razos embodies the poet’s ‘jealousy, disappointment, and anger’ by comparing them with the pleasures of other lovers. Also, it was possible to note that it was a ‘new poetics’ that expressed ‘subjectivity’ that was not specifically revealed in poetry.
