Abstract
This study analyzes the advantages and challenges of AI-based assessment and explores desirable future directions and practical tasks for its implementation from an educational technology perspective. To achieve this, the study examines (a) the key benefits and roles of generative AI-based assessment, (b) the significant issues and concerns raised when applying generative AI-based assessment in educational settings, and (c) the educational technology tasks and solutions required to realize its educational value. The findings indicate that AI-based assessment offers efficiency, reliability, and personalization through automated scoring, adaptive testing, individualized feedback, and large-scale learning data analysis. At the assessment stage, additionally, AI serves three primary roles: (1) functioning as an assessment tool itself, (2) providing immediate and personalized feedback based on assessment results, and (3) supporting learning, monitoring, and program evaluation through learning analytics. However, several critical challenges were also identified, including issues of fairness stemming from data or algorithmic bias, plagiarism, privacy violations, validity and reliability concerns in higher-order thinking skills assessments such as written or constructed-response tasks, cognitive offloading, and the potential hindrance of learners’ critical thinking and creativity development due to overreliance on AI. Based on these results, the study proposes educational technology-based strategies to enhance the effectiveness of AI-based assessment. These include fostering human-AI collaborative assessment, shifting toward formative and process-oriented assessment that supports continuous learner growth, and developing instructional design and operational approaches for sustainable AI-based assessment that extend beyond ethical considerations.
