Abstract
This study investigates the mediating role of emotional expressiveness in the relationship between appearance management motivation, consumption tendencies, and makeup behavior among women aged 14 to 39. In today’s society, the growing focus on physical appearance in social and media contexts has led women to engage more in appearance management, not only for personal satisfaction but also to influence social perceptions. Understanding the psychological mechanisms and behavioral patterns behind makeup practices is crucial for advancing academic research and developing strategies in the beauty industry. A total of 260 women participated in a self-administered survey, using standardized instruments to measure appearance management motivation, consumption tendencies, makeup behavior, and emotional expressiveness. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics to profile participants, Pearson’s correlation analysis to explore relationships among variables, and multiple regression analysis to assess the mediating effect of emotional expressiveness. The results revealed that appearance management motivation has a strong direct influence on makeup behavior, while emotional expressiveness did not show a significant mediating effect. Furthermore, women with higher appearance management motivation demonstrated greater tendencies toward beauty-related consumption, indicating that makeup practices are primarily driven by self-image enhancement and social impression management rather than emotional expression. These findings underscore the functional role of makeup as a tool for constructing personal identity and presenting oneself socially within contemporary beauty culture. The study offers valuable insights into the psychological factors that influence women’s beauty practices and provides empirical evidence to guide personalized marketing strategies in the cosmetic industry. Future research should include a broader and more diverse age range, incorporate male participants, and utilize longitudinal designs to further investigate the evolving impact of emotional factors on makeup behaviors over time.
