결국 승부를 걸어야 하는 목표는 “사람을 위함(For the people)”이다.
Abstract
When Hollywood films dominated Korean movie theaters, was there even a perception of “American Wave” in this land? When Japanese manga, such as Galaxy Express 999, was gaining explosive popularity among Korean children, did anyone ever apply the term “Japanese Wave”? There is a prerequisite to understanding that the term “Hallyu,” created by Japanese media, originated from the sensibilities of the Japanese, who love classification and are skilled in linguistic manipulation. It is urgent to confirm that the term “Hallyu” is not a domestic product. In fact, the term has been originated from Japanese media and spreaded globally; it is desirable to understand it essentially as a phenomenon of globalization that intersected with the perception of popular culture in Japanese society during the 1990s. In a narrow sense, Hallyu falls within the category of entertainment. It can be described as a form of entertainment that has adapted to the progression of capitalist and neo-capitalist societies. In a broad sense, it can be understood as a comprehensive cultural phenomenon encompassing performing arts and entertainment, arising from the combination of capitalism, electronic communication, and media systems formed in modern Korea. Therefore, one must avoid the illusion that the Korean Wave merely displays “genuine culture” (Sapir 1924), which represents the beautiful aspects of humanity. A theoretical premise is required that the “spurious culture” that torments people is also deeply embedded within the Korean Wave (Hallyu). There is a saying that bad money drives out good one. Likewise, spurious culture tends to expel genuine culture anytime and anywhere. The moment the capacity to cultivate the nourishment necessary for the genuine culture of the Korean Wave—where “people come first”—to thrive and to proudly offer it to the world falls short, the Korean Wave faces the fate of vanishing like a mirage. This is not a matter of money. It is a matter of enhancing the ability to foster the genuine culture of Koreans inherent in Korean society. We must also clearly recognize the imperative that the results of a process achieved by humans as the agents must ultimately be for the benefit of humanity. The human endeavor known as the Korean Wave is no exception. Ultimately, the goal we must stake everything on is “For the people.” To achieve this, there is no other way but to make our mark by transforming a humanized Korean Wave into a global community. Humanization does not equate to anthropocentrism. Humanization is premised on symbiosis and commensalism.
