본 논문은 독창적인 영화 서사를 통해 일상에서 빚어지는 삶의 모순을 관조하도록 하는 에릭 로메르의 작품을 살펴보고자 한다. 그는 영화의 미장센과 카메라 기법 등을 통해 겉으로 드러난 삶 이면에 있는 우리 존재의 참된 모습과 진실을 꿰뚫어 보게 한다. <여름 이야기>는 시공간적 배경 안에서 그에 걸맞은 인물과 이야기를 가져와 자연과 사물에 깃들어 있는 사실적 요소가 등장인물들의 대사를 통해 메아리치도록 한다. 여름과 바다의 젊은이들은 자연의 표상을 표현하고 불확실성이라는 실재에 주저함과 불안을 드러내며, 각자에게 주어진 삶을 대면하고 있다. 로메르는 영화만이 그려낼 수 있는 서사 장치를 그만의 방법으로 관객에게 전하면서 주인공 가스파르의 실존적 선택을 실패가 아닌 존재의 현전임을 인식하도록 안내한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the works of Eric Rohmer, who allows us to observe the contradictions of life that occur in everyday life through unique film narratives. Through the film’s mise-en-scène and camera techniques, he allows us to see through these contradictions to the true nature and truth of our existence behind the life that is revealed on the surface.〈Conte d’été〉brings appropriate characters and stories within a spatio-temporal background, and allows realistic elements embedded in nature and objects to echo through the character’s lines. Young people in summer and the sea express expressions of nature, show hesitation and anxiety about the reality of uncertainty, and face the life that has been given to them. Rohmer conveys a narrative device that only movies can depict to the audience in his own way, and guides them to recognize that the protagonist Gaspard’s existential choices are not a failure, but a reality of existence.
