본 연구의 목적은 최근 20년간 국외 학술지에 발표된 다층지원체계(MTSS) 관련 문헌을 체계적으로 분석하여 국제적 연구 흐름과 중재연구의 구조적 특징을 파악하고 국내 적용을 위한 시사점을 도출하는 데 있다. PRISMA 절차에 따라 89편의 연구를 선정하여 전반적 동향을 분석하고, 이 중 중재연구 29편은 연구설계유형, 중재환경, Tier 구성, MTSS 구성요소, 중재충실도 보고 여부 등을 심층적으로 검토하였다. 분석 결과, 전체 연구의 96%가 미국에서 수행되었으며, 연구주제는 ‘MTSS 시스템 구축·실행’이 가장 높은 비중을 차지하였다. 중재연구는 주로 유치원·초등학교에서 이루어졌고 사회·정서·행동 및 학업·언어·문해 영역에집중되어 있었다. 연구설계는 준실험·실행·단일대상 연구가 다수였으며 RCT는 적은 편이었다. 지원단계 구성은 단일 단계보다 1~3단계를 통합한 다층적 구조가 더 일반적이었고, 중재에서 사용된 MTSS 구성요소는 증거기반 실제, 모니터링, 선별검사가 가장 많았다. 중재충실도는 다수의 연구에서 보고되었으나 실행 과정 중심 연구에서는 누락된 경우도 있었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 국내 MTSS 적용을 위한 실행 인프라 구축, 교육 현장의 맥락을 고려한 MTSS 적용 사례연구 확대, 그리고 국내 교육현장의 요구를 고려한 MTSS 적용 단계 및 지원영역 확대 등의 시사점 및 연구방향을 논의하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to systematically analyze international literature on the MultiTiered System of Supports (MTSS) published over the past 20 years, identify international research trends and the structural characteristics of intervention studies, and derive implications for implementing MTSS in Korea. Following PRISMA procedures, 89 studies were selected to examine overall trends, and 29 intervention studies were further analyzed in depth with respect to research design, intervention settings, Tier configuration, MTSS components, and fidelity reporting. The analysis revealed that 96% of the studies were conducted in the United States, and that “MTSS system implementation and operation” accounted for the largest proportion of research topics. Intervention studies were primarily conducted in preschool and elementary settings, focusing on social–emotional–behavioral and academic/literacy domains. The predominant research designs were quasi-experimental studies, action research, and singlecase designs, whereas randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were relatively uncommon. Multi-tier structures integrating Tiers 1–3 were more common than single-tier studies, and the MTSS components most frequently used were evidence-based practices, progress monitoring, and universal screening. Although many studies reported intervention fidelity, some implementation-focused studies did not provide explicit fidelity information. Based on these findings, this study discussed implications and future research directions related to the establishment of an implementation infrastructure for MTSS application in Korea, the expansion of context-sensitive MTSS implementation case studies, and the extension of MTSS implementation tiers and support domains that reflect the needs of Korean educational settings.
