Abstract

The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of songwriting using folk songs on the improvement of morale, quality of life, and self expression of elderly in the day care center. The subjects of the study were 29 elderly people with a Cognitive Impairment Screening Test(CIST) score of 10 or more among users of the day care center located in I city, of which 14 were randomly designated to the experimental group and 15 control group. Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale(PGCMS), the Korean version of the Quality of Life Scale in old age(K-CASP-16), and the Self-Directed Assertiveness Training(SDAT) were used as test tools, and a songwriting program using folk songs was applied to the experimental group, consisting of 10 sessions, twice a week. Independent sample t-test and a paired t-test were conducted for data analysis. The result of this study was proven to be effective in improving the morale, quality of life, and self expression of pre-post program participation subjects. Therefore, this study suggests that the songwriting program using folk songs can be an effective approach to promote psychological and social health of elderly in the day care center.
