Abstract
This paper explores Chomsky's (2000: 16, 2004: 14) suggestion that ‘perhaps phases also include DP’ as well as v*P and CP. It reviews the bounding theory and the barrier theory, and compares them with the phase theory, focusing on the notion of phase and the phase impnetrability condition, as proposed by Chomsky (2000, 2004). This paper argues that if the notion of phase is introduced to reduce the computational burden or complexity in syntactic derivation, phases may well include definite DP, as well as CP and v*P. The arguments for the phasehood of definite DPs are: first, in the bounding theory (Chomsky 1973: 247-248) NP, along with IP, is counted as a bounding node; second, in the barrier theory, as Chomsky (1986: 6-7) proposed, in the clause-internal wh-movement the object (as opposed to the VP-adjoined adverbial or the subject) adjoin to VP (a barrier) prior to moving to Spec-CP; third, the phase impenetrability condition equally applies to all the three kinds of phases; and last, definite DP as well as v*P and CP can be isolated as a relatively independent unit in the course of a derivation and moved by a syntactic operation, which is one of the strongest properties of a phase.
