Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to show a new approach to the syntactic analysis of the verbal morphology system, which has not been pursued since Chomsky(1998). Based on Chomsky(2005), I try to shed a new light on the treatments of English verbal morphology through AGREEMENT feature-checking between T and V. In this article the feature checking system of the person feature in T is different from that of the number feature in T. The number feature in T is feature-checked between the probe and the goal in its place but the person feature in T is required to move a lexical category to check its relevant features due to the proficiency of feature checking. With the assumption that ‘Move' is cost-free operation in Chomsky(2005), computational economy prefers the moving of a lexical category to feature-checking when the label of the probe contains much more information (the label yields much more information for the person feature than for the number feature in that ‘person' is inflected differently according to the singular and plural items). After considering the three central topics having taken in the analysis of verbal morphology-the syntactic movement of V, syntax-driven to verbal morphology and the inheritance of TP by C, I review and criticise major approaches having been emerged on the realm of verbal morphology in the syntax and then I proceed to my logic. This approach can be also predicted that the subject is raised to spec of T without EPP owing to the person feature in T and T is enough to inherit only φ-feature from C, contrary to Chomsky (2005).
