Abstract
This paper offers a critical evaluation of-and an alternative to-a well-known hypothesis that rich inflection is the cause of verb movement. In this paper I challenge the validity of the hypothesis above. A survey of literature shows that this hypothesis is empirically untenable in the following arguments: 1) the verbal position of Old English, 2) language changes between Middle English and Present English, 3) the different behaviors of verb movement in Scandinavian Languages. In this respect I consider rich verbal inflection to be the consequences of the syntactic operation where verbs are merged with (fully) inflected forms in the lexicon.
